Getting Started

Q: What is RP?

A: RP stands for "Role Playing", and in this instance, it means that members come together to write stories about fictional characters. They take turns writing a few paragraphs at a time in a thread, and thereby they create larger stories, plots, fictional relationships, etc.

Q: How does Forum RP Work?

A: Forum RP is play-by-post. Essentially, one person starts a forum thread. In it, they outline the setting for the RP, which character they are RPing with, and what the character is doing. Other participants can then formulate their own replies to the thread. They include their character's actions as well. Together, the players create a short story in which a pair of characters (or more) interact and work through brief plots and/or portions of story arcs. That is the essence of Forum RP.

Q: How do I join the game?

A: The first step is to visit our Application and fill it out. You can decide what skills and abilities you'd like your character to have, his gender, age, and lots more! Once you're finished, post your resulting code to our New Characters section, and wait for feedback from the Administration. Once your application is approved, you're ready to go!

Q: What's the difference between Psionic Abilities, and Magic?

A: In Emeria, Psionic Abilities work differently than Magic. Psionic Abilities are extra skills that are used by the brain, like sight, hearing, sense of smell and touch, the ability to speak, and so on. They take up the user's personal energy, in the same way that running or working out uses up energy. If a person with Psionic Abilities uses their ability too much, they can exhaust themselves and become seriously ill, or cause damage to themselves.

Alternately, a person who uses Magic gets his energy from an outside source. He has to collect it from another living creature, such as an animal or another human being. He is limited in that he has to have somewhere to store his magical energy, and that he can run out of his energy stores if he uses too many spells.

Q: What is a Starter Character?

A: Alternately known as a "Beginner Character," these are characters which help new members learn how the world of Emeria works, whether they join as an Argent, a Mage, or an Apprentice. They start out in a schooling phase, and 'graduate' in order to become a full-fledged member of Emerian society.

Q: Do I have to have a Starter Character?

A: While we highly recommend starting with one of these, your first character doesn't have to be a Starter as long as you show us that you are mature, level-headed, and a capable writer. You must have a firm grasp of the English language, including spelling and grammar, in addition to an ability to write creatively, before we will consider allowing you to bypass the Starter Character requirement.

Q: What are Familiars?

A: Familiars are feral animals that have a heightened intelligence, and are magically or telepathically attached to one single person. Magic users keep familiars to help them collect magical energy, and the Argents use theirs as battle-worthy companions who protect them, and carry them across the vast distances they must travel.

Q: How do I acquire a Familiar?

A: The easiest way to acquire a Familiar is to complete your training with your Starter Character. However, you can apply for a Familiar using the Familiar Application provided.

Q: What kinds of Familiar are available?

A: Generally speaking, the most common forms of Familiar are going to be domesticated animals, but we do allow some types of Wildlife to be made into Familiars as well, such as: wolves; deer and elk; owls, hawks and other birds of prey; mountain lions, tigers, and other big cats; and bears. If you're unsure if your Familiar's species will be permitted, feel free to ask!

Face Claims

Q: What is a Face Claim?

A: In essence, a face claim is an image of an actor, actress, model, spokesperson or other famous individual whose likeness you claim for your character. It's a visual representation of your character that helps other members see what he or she looks like.

Q: Are Face Claims Required?

A: Yes, they are required. Otherwise, how will we know what your character looks like?

Q: Why are Face Claims Required?

A: Because not everyone possesses the skills to draw their own character well, or at all. We feel that every person has a right to a good quality character reference, and the best way to control this is by requiring photos of real-life people. Additionally, it prevents others from stealing artwork to use as their character's reference, which is beneficial as well.

Q: Can I Use My Drawings?

A: Unfortnately, at this time Emeria does not permit the use of drawings, paintings, or other artwork as Face Claims.

Q: What if the Face Claim I want is Taken?

A: If the face claim you want has already been claimed by someone else, unfortunately there is no way for you to use it. Sometimes, face claims will be freed up if a character is killed off, the OOC Player goes inactive, or someone is banned - but as long as the Player is still active, his/her face claim still stands.

Q: Can I edit my Face Claim's picture?

A: Yes, you can make minor edits. Most commonly, edits to photos include changes in eye color, hair color, skin tones and clothing. Additional edits might include scars, freckles, or tattoos. Additions such as horns, wings, tails, etc. to humanoid characters are not permitted.

Tags & Alerts

Q: What does it mean when someone Tags another player in a thread?

A: When you see a thread title with "Tag: (Name)" in it, that generally means that the person posting the thread has already set up and RP with the person they're tagging. For example, let's pretend that Kate and Riva are RPing together. Kate starts a thread like so:
[Tag: Riva] Walking in the Park

Kate is signifying that she has set up that RP for Riva specifically. It is considered impolite to reply to a tagged thread if you are not one of the people tagged. You can, however, PM any of the participants and ask them if you can join in. It is up to the creators of the thread to decide whether or not they'd like additional parties to join.

Q: What does [Tag:Open] or [Open] mean?

A: A thread tagged as "open" is available for anyone to join in on, regardless of how many people are currently playing in that thread.

Q: What is the Alerts system?

A: The alerts system is a new feature on the forums which allows members to receive notifications for various events on the site. These include new PMs, thread replies, tags made by other members, and announcements from Admin.

Q: How do I tag someone so that they receive an alert?

A: You may have noticed that members can tag others in a post. It turns their name blue, forms a link to their profile and also sends that user an Alert. It's very easy to do this yourself! All it takes is for you to put an @ symbol in front of the user's OOC Name. This is similar to tagging someone on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and some other social media sites.

In the instance that someone's OOC name is two words, or it becomes necessary to tag an IC account, the tagging is slightly different. Instead of simply typing an @ followed by the name, you'll type an @ with the whole user name in brackets. For example: @ [John Doe] -- just remove the space after the @ to get it to work.

We recommend only tagging someone's OOC account for best results. Alerts sent to IC sub-accounts may not be viewed in a timely manner.

Argents & the World

Q: How well-known are the Argents?

A: Very well known. Every child in Geheim and Aerlion grows up hearing tales of the Argents from early on, even if the child's family is not particularly religious. Additionally, Argents travel to every major town or city once a year to test children for the presence of Gifts. Therefore, most children come into contact with Argents on an annual basis, until it is determined whether or not they have Gifts that can be trained. Usually from age 7 through age 13 or 14.

Q: Are Argents identifiable by sight?

A: Usually. Argents tend to wear clothing that is patterned with the alchemical symbol for silver, which is 3 arrows pointing upwards, that are crossed at their bases like this: \|/. Since they are the only ones who do this, it is easy to spot an Argent without having to ask questions.

Q: Do all the Argents wander the Two Kingdoms?

A: No. Some choose to station themselves within a city, some agree to be hired on by some of the greater Noble Houses, and some stay on at the Monastery as teachers, administrators or because they are unable to leave without assistance.

Forum Rating

Emeria is rated 3/2/2 by the RPGRating.com system. This rating means that, in addition to less intense scenes, we also permit the use of foul language, and some kinds of graphic violence and sexual scenes. But don't worry, that doesn't mean that that's all you'll find here! Threads which surpass a PG rating will be marked as such, which will prevent any accidents. However, we do request that all of our members are at least 16 years of age before joining.
